Aug 5th: Salsa
The WI Liters were transformed into salsa divas in August with a dance class from “Salsamojo”. Our talented dance instructors John and Shanon managed to find natural grace and style in even those of us with two left feet.
After a few sangrias to make us a little sassier on the dancefloor, we discovered that Salsa is definitely the Latin way to lift your spirits. Everyone was up and dancing and enjoying themselves and we were amazed by how John and Shanon got us all looking like (semi!) professionals in under two hours. A few of us caught the salsa bug that night!
Sept 2nd: Swishing
The Sutton Veny WI Liters hosted a Swishing event in September where members and friends could bring along their unwanted clothes and swap them with other people.
The event also featured a talk from style consultant guest speaker, Julie Merrifield from House of Colour in Devizes, who started the night off with hints on optimising wardrobes with accessories, clothes and styles that flatter different colour tones and body shapes.
Swishing is an environmentally and economically friendly way of getting new outfits without splashing out, especially at a time when every penny counts. It has grown in popularity with swishing events taking place frequently across the UK and our members now know what the excitement is all about.
Members donated their good quality unwanted clothes in advance and collected tokens which could be swapped for items of clothing at the event. It was a real success with many items of high end clothing, shoes and accessories that had been languishing in wardrobes given in before the event and more on the night. Most people picked up something and some members left the event with armfuls.
It is nice to think that our unwanted items might now be treasured by new owners. It was lots of fun and we’ve been asked when we’ll do it again, maybe next year?
The left over clothing was donated to chosen charity Dorothy House Hospice’s shop in Warminster.
Oct 7th: Fabulous Feet
Fabulous Feet- this month, we were all treated to a DIY foot softening treatment with Helen Robertson, Southwest Regional Manager from the Body Shop. Helen showed us how to take away the stress of the day with a relaxing customized foot soak, before pampering our feet with an exfoliating foot scrub. Our feet were then treated to a range of fabulous smelling Body Shop moisturisers which were great for dry skin and tired feet.
Next we learnt about the benefits of reflexology and what it can do for feet as well as body with Val from Top to Toe Wellness Centre in George Street, Warminster. Reflexology uses specific touch techniques of applying pressure to reflex points of the feet and hands. Val explained that reflexology on the feet is an alternative health technique said to improve stress, anxiety, chronic lower back pain, and other health issues. She demonstrated the technique on one of our members who certainly looked like she enjoyed the relaxing treatment.
And now we know how to give a little TLC to our tootsies, we need to make sure they are properly kitted out. So we welcomed Cat Travers, PR manager for Duo Boots who explained that at DUO, style is nothing without fit, which is why they offer an extensive range of calf fit women's leather boots and a beautiful collection of shoes in regular and width fitting options.

Nov 4th: Jewellery
Creative Jewellery
It’s not often that as grown women with careers and busy family lives we get the chance to sit down and learn a new creative skill for ourselves, and so it was a pleasure to have two hours hands-on tutorial at the last meeting of SVWI Lite with the Travelling Jeweller Ruth Facey.
A simple design can turn out to be a thing of beauty in the right hands.
With Ruth’s expert guidance, we were able to avoid frustration, straighten any kinks (hammering silver is a great stress reliever!) and each produce several unique and pretty pieces.
Dec 2nd: Wreaths
"Christmas Wreath Making...."
Workshop with Lucy Pitman.
What a treat to be able to hang your own wreath on your door this year. Check the photo gallery to see how we got on!
Dec 17th: Xmas Dinner
Our first Christmas Dinner was a huge success. We booked out the Woolpack Pub in the village and enjoyed a wonderful meal.
Apr 7th: Our 1st Birthday
A year ago we started as we meant to go on with a Cocktail Party.
One year on we'll be celebrating with a Champagne Tasting party.
Ever wondered how the bubbles in a Champagne bottle got there?
Have you got a bottle of Champagne lurking somewhere and you don’t know how long you can keep it?
To find out more about how Champagne is made, how to serve and store Champagne and the differences between a Non-Vintage and a Vintage Champagne – come to the Sutton Veny WI Lite on Wednesday 7th April. There will be the opportunity to taste and compare some different Champagnes but feel free to bring a bottle along - either to find out more about it or simply to drink it.
May 5th: Debate
May W.I Resolution Debate
The WI's campaigns have always been important (Remember "Keep Britain Tidy?" that was one of ours!)
We are very happy that it has been overwhelmingly decided by the members that this year's WI resolution is calling for the mandatory labelling of food with the true country of origin.
We are always keen to buy British! May's meeting will investigate this further, with a passionate speaker leading the debate and helping us to better understand the issues.
Jun 2nd: Ceroc Evening
Break out your swishy skirts and dancing shoes… We’re going to be Ceroc Dancing!
Ceroc is an abbreviation of the French phrase c'est Rock and is a fusion of Salsa, Ballroom, Hip Hop, Tango and Jive. We invited Instructor Richard who runs Warminster based Ceroc Classes to show us some moves. It’s a great way to meet people, have fun and keep fit all whilst learning to dance.
Leave your stilettos and flip flops at home as these may not be suitable.
Jul 7th: Hypnotism

Sep 1st: Life After Death?
Is there life after death? Whether you think Yes or No, our September meeting will prove to be an interesting one. In truth, we probably all hope there is something that comes after but our speaker will lead the debate.
Nov 3rd: Fight like a girl
Fight Like A Girl:
Self- Defense Skills Workshop
1st Dec: Christmas Party
Wylye Women Christmas Party
Jan 5th: Neal's Yard
Neal's Yard Remedies
The Wylye Women of WI Lite will be Looking Good and Feeling Younger in 2011 thanks to Nicola Daley from Neal’s Yard, from their nearby Gillingham head offices. Neal’s Yard are passionate about transforming people’s lives, by educating and empowering them on how to live more healthily through the power of nature. Nicola’s talk was in no way a sales pitch…instead she gave excellent advice on the addition of essential nutrients and herbs to the diet as well as to our regular beauty regimes in order to combat the aging process and neutralise environmental pollutants and free radicals. And then we got to sample the goodies- they are such luxurious feeling products! And it was good to know that as well as being able to get nutritional and health advice locally in their Bath and Salisbury shops, their experts can make up personal formulations of herbal remedies as well provide all sorts of alternative and massage therapies in their Gillingham treatment rooms.
Feb 2nd: First Aid
Family First Aid Workshop:
With the help of a grant from the Sutton Veny Flower Show Committee, the Wylye Women of Sutton Veny WI Lite were able to hold a Family First Aid Workshop for the benefit of members and the local community.
The workshop was led by Nigel Inseal of EFA First Responders, a Westbury based organisation which provides first aid training to businesses and organisations around the country.
During the 2 hour session Nigel covered strokes, heart attacks and choking, which, he told us, represented the most common 999 calls. Training dolls were used to provide hands-on experience of CPR and the Heimlich manoeuvre, something that most of us found far harder than we had imagined.
The participants thoroughly enjoyed a most instructive evening, delivered with just the right balance of humour and seriousness, and left feeling more confident in their ability to deal with these situations should the need arise.
Mar 2nd: Graphology
Graphology:
As we closed a second year of WI Lite, we introduced John Jameson Davis DipIGA who gave an entertaining and informative look at Graphology. By studying the directions, shapes and sizes of writing on the paper, a graphologist can ascertain what was going on in the personality of the writer at the time. Measurements are taken to check the movement of the writing, the form which the writer chooses to apply and how the writing is arranged on the sheet of paper.
Politicitians, celebrities and criminals were featured in John’s collection of handwriting specimens. John showed that Graphology is a powerful tool that could be used in the fields of human psychology and sociology to reveal hidden personality traits and using a variety of handwriting samples he brought the writers alive, including gruesome samples from serial murderers. John also looked at what the handwriting samples of some of our members revealed and we discovered a bit about what makes them tick!
